# Shoreline Lanterns
Between tide and tide there is a pause that cannot be owned.
## Four lanterns
- Selection — what is chosen from outside
- Attestability — what can be witnessed without capture
- Interpretation — what can be read without reclassification
- Category-definition authority — what must not quietly become the referee
## Compact rule
External(X) holds only if:
1. the authority source for X is independently outside the governed legitimacy chain,
2. it is non-derivable from that chain,
3. the naming/certification of that source is not silently captured by the same chain.
## Warning
The dictionary is not a gate.
The taxonomy is not neutral merely because it is alphabetized.
The watcher of the threshold cannot also be the writer of its exception.
